On April 22nd Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) joined with representatives from United Auto Workers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and the Green Machines Tour for an "Earth Day Auto Show". The event showcased fuel-efficient vehicles that are union-made in the US, including the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Jeep Liberty Diesel and the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid. The event also featured a press conference with Congressman Dingell, representatives from the auto industry and the Green Machines Tour. Congressman Dingell spoke about tax incentives that would promote US-made fuel-efficient vehicles, including manufacturer and consumer tax credits.
Charles Griffith of the Ecology Center emphasized the importance of new policy initiatives that could further increase investments in advanced technologies. He highlighted recent proposals for a manufacturer tax credit that would provide an incentive for converting existing manufacturing facilities to produce advanced fuel-efficient technologies. "We believe that such a proposal, along with other consumer and government fleet purchasing incentives, could go a long way toward ensuring that the good auto jobs of the future remain here in the U.S.," Griffith said. UAW Region 1A representative Jim Pederson expressed appreciation to Congressmen Dingell and the Green Machines Tour for their efforts to promote these new policy alternatives. After the press conference the public and the media were invited to test drive the advanced vehicles that were on display. The event was held at UAW Region 1A headquarters in Taylor, Michigan.
