Ford F-150

Technology: Variable Valve Timing (VVT)
MPG (City/Hwy): 15/19 (2WD), 14/18 (4WD)
Estimated Fuel Economy Improvement: 4-8%

The F-150 uses a 5.4L Triton V-8 engine with VVT. The engine, which debuted in 2004, was the first Ford V-8 to use VVT to generate both lower-speed torque and high-speed horsepower, while also improving fuel economy and minimizing exhaust emissions.

The first F-150 with this engine was produced in June 2003 at Ford's Norfolk Assembly plant in Norfolk, Virginia. Renovations and expansions to the plant for the new F-150 cost $375 million.

In 2004, production of the F-150 began at Ford's new truck plant at the Rouge complex in Dearborn, Michigan. The new Dearborn Truck Plant showcases several innovative technologies that reduce the environmental impact of the plant while also saving money. Examples include: A 10 acre living roof that reduces heating and cooling costs, 36 skylights that provide natural light and save electricity, ÒFumes to FuelÓ technology that uses paint fumes to power fuel cells that generate electricity, hanging trellises with deciduous vines that provide shade and habitat.
