Technology: Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Fuel Economy Improvement: 4% Ford's Lima Engine Plant will begin production of a new 3.5L Duratec V-6 Engine, that will utilize VVT and improve fuel economy over the current 3.0L Duratec engine. The engine will first be used in the Ford Edge and Lincoln Aviator crossover utility vehicles, beginning in 2006 for the 2007 model year. In these vehicles, the engine will be mated to Ford's new six-speed automatic transmission, providing a combined fuel-economy improvement of up to 7% At the Lima Engine Plant, Ford is investing $335 million to install new equipment for the engine, and is preserving over 800 UAW organized jobs. Production is expected to be around 325,000 units per year at full production.
