GM's Ecotec Engine with VVT Ecotec Turbo Engine

Technology: Variable Valve Timing; Gasoline Direct Injection
Fuel Economy Improvement: 4-8%; up to 15% (estimated)

Saturn's Spring Hill Assembly plant is building all new Ecotec engines. In 2005, the plant began building the 2.4L Ecotec I-4 engine that is equipped with variable-valve -timing and a host of other features that maximize performance while also improving fuel economy. It is currently featured on the Saturn ION, Pontiac G6, Chevrolet HHR, Chevrolet Cobalt, and Pontiac Solstice, and Saturn Sky.

In 2006, the plant will begin production of a new 2.0L Ecotec Turbo engine. The Turbo engine will use gasoline direct injection (GDI) to improve fuel economy and increase power. This is the first GDI engine to be used in the domestic vehicle market.

GM began a major investment in the Spring Hill plant in 2001. As of 2006, investment has reached over $1.5 billion, including $500,000 for renovation and expansion of the engine assembly lines.
