Technology: Variable Valve Timing Fuel Economy Improvement: 5% GM's aluminum Vortec I-6 engine produces more power and torque than larger displacement V-8s, while offering better fuel economy. It is currently offered in the Chevy Trailblazer and GMC Envoy. Production started in 2001 after a $500 million investment to revamp GM's Flint Assembly Plant. GM recently expanded the plant to begin production of its Global V-6 engines. The engines use VVT to improve efficiency and are used in a number of GMC, Saturn, Chevrolet and other new GM vehicles. Including GM's new crossover vehicles: Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave. GM invested $300 million to expand the plant. The expansion is creating 300 UAW jobs and helping to secure 3,000 existing jobs at the facility. Production began in September 2006. TAKE ACTION! Tell Congress to encourage more investments like this in production of advanced technology vehicles. Last year, GM announced that the Flint Engine South plant is one of the first manufacturing facilities in the U.S. to achieve the goal of recycling or reusing all of its waste. The plant recycles over 97% of its waste and converts the remaining 3% to energy. The environmental benefits of the plant's waste recycling efforts include the prevention of over 44,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions being emitted into the atmosphere, and the preservation of over 3,000 mature trees annually.
