Technology: Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Estimated Fuel Economy Improvement: 4-8% The all-new 2006 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky roadsters feature a 2.4L I-4 engine with variable-valve-timing. The Wilmington, Delaware plant began production of the vehicles late in 2005, after GM invested over $50 million in upgrading the plant for the new vehicles. The plant upgrades help secure several hundred UAW jobs. For the 2007 model year, GM will introduce the Pontiac Solstice GXP and the Saturn Sky Redline. These versions will feature GM's new 2.0L Ecotec Turbo engine which uses gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology. The new GDI engine injects the fuel right into the combustion chamber of each cylinder causing a more complete burn. The engine also varies the amount of fuel that is injected, depending on the driving conditions. This technology improves fuel economy by up to 15%, decreases emissions, and increases power.
