Detroit Diesel Corporation has announced its intention to build two new advanced diesel engines at its Redford assembly plant. A new heavy-duty diesel engine for Freightliner Group tractor-trailer trucks will use exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology and diesel particulate filters to achieve a 50% reduction in NOx emissions and a 90% reduction in particulate matter emissions. A new medium-duty Mercedes Benz engine will replace the company's existing medium-duty engine that is currently built in Germany; it will also utilize EGR technology. Production of these new engines will preserve 1300 jobs at the Redford plant. Production is scheduled to begin in 2007.
