DUAL-CLUTCH TRANSMISSION
Tipton County Transmission Plant
Tipton County, IN

Chrysler Group and GETRAG recently announced plans to build a new facility to produce all new dual-clutch transmissions for future Chrysler vehicles.

The companies are investing $530M and creating 1050 full-time Chrysler Group UAW-represented workers at the facility. Production of transmissions is scheduled to being early in 2009 for use in 2010 model year vehicles.

Dual-clutch technology features two independent gear sets with separate clutches. During shifts, the next gear is anticipated and selected. Then one clutch is opened while the other is closed, allowing shifting without torque interuption. This is expected to result in better performance, as well as a 5 to 10% fuel economy increase in future Chrysler Group vehicles.
