GM recently announced a major investment of $332 million to renovate its transmission plant in Toledo, Ohio. The plant will begin production in early 2010 of new Hydra-Matic six-speed transmissions for front-wheel-drive vehicles. The project is expected to retain 600 UAW-organized jobs at the facility.

GM began production of its six-speed transmissions in 2006 at its plant in Warren, MI. The transmission is currently being used it the Saturn Aura, Pontiac G6, Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave .

The new investment in Toledo will allow GM to incorporate the transmission into additional vehicle lines. GM will also invest an additional $57 million for supplier tooling and other equipment to support the Toledo operations.

Last, year, GM invested $540 million in the Toledo plant in order to produce six-speed transmissions for rear-wheel-drive vehicles. That initiative was responsible for the retention of 900 UAW jobs at the facility.

TAKE ACTION! Tell Congress to encourage more investments like this in production of advanced technology vehicles.
