GM's V-6 Engine with Cylinder Deactivation

Technology: Cylinder Deactivation and Variable Valve Timing
Fuel Economy Improvement: 8%

GM's Tonawanda Powertrain Plant will produce new V-6 and I-5 engines that incorporate cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy. The engines will appear in mid and full size cars, trucks, SUVs and vans.

The new engines are responsible for the retention of 720 jobs that were planned for elimination due to the phase out of current engine models. GM is investing $300 million in plant renovations for the new engine. Production will begin in 2005.

Also at Tonawonda, UAW members are producing new 3.9L V-6 engines with variable valve timing. Production of these updated engines began in 2005 for assembly into 2006 model year vehicles, including the Chevrolet Malibu, Impala, Monte Carlo and Uplander, the Pontiac G6 and Montana, the Buick Terraza, and the Saturn Relay.
