UAW-MADE ADVANCED FUEL-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES IN OHIO

Ohio is home to a number of UAW organized facilities that are engaged in the manufacture of advanced, fuel-efficient technologies and vehicles. These technologies and vehicles, in addition to their increased fuel-economy and reduced emissions, also provide a variety of benefits to Ohio's economy and large automotive employment base.

ADVANCED TRANSMISSIONS IN SHARONVILLE

UAW Local 863 in Sharonville is involved in the production of several new transmissions that responsible for significant investments in the plant and its work force. These transmissions have five or six gear ratios instead of the conventional four, which allows for more efficiency during driving and smoother acceleration.

MANUFACTURING IN OHIO
  • Ohio ranks second in the U.S. in the production of motor vehicles
  • Manufacturing provides 850,000 good jobs in Ohio, and more than half of all Ohio jobs depend on the manufacturing sector
  • Ohio lost more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2004
  • Though Ohio’s economy is starting to grow again, Ohio manufacturing continues to face enormous pressures from overseas competitors.

Ohio Manufacturing Summit, 2003

AUTOMATIC SIX-SPEED FOR FWD VEHICLES
As part of a $370 million investment, the Sharonville plant will be upgraded to produce gears for this new transmission, creating 250 jobs at the plant in the process. The transmission will improve fuel economy by 4% over conventional four-speeds.

AUTOMATIC SIX-SPEED FOR RWD VEHICLES
The Sharonville plant received $155 million in investment to produce gears for this new advanced transmission. The new transmission will go into production in 2005 and will increase fuel economy by 4 to 8% over the conventional four-speeds it replaces.

AUTOMATIC FIVE SPEED FOR RWD VEHICLES
After an $81 million investment, the Sharonville plant began production of this new transmission in 2003. The transmission improves fuel economy by 4 to 6% and is featured in the 2005 Ford Mustang, Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird.

CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSIONS IN BATAVIA

UAW Local 863 in Batavia is currently building FordŐs new continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). These advanced transmissions utilize state of the art technology that provides improved performance and increased fuel economy.

  • The new CVTs use a belt and pulley system instead of gears, allowing the transmission to apply the most efficient drive ratio during every driving situation.
  • CVTs increase fuel economy by 4 to 8% over conventional four-speed automatics.
  • Ford's CVTs are currently featured in the Five Hundred, Freestyle and Mercury Montego vehicles, as well as European models.

ADVANCED ENGINES COMING TO LIMA

UAW Local 1219 in Lima will soon begin production of Ford's new 3.5L V-6 engine. This new engine is responsible for significant plant investment and fuel savings.

  • The new engine will employ variable valve timing technology that increases the engine's efficiency and reduces its emissions.
  • The engine will increase fuel economy by 6 to 8% over the engine it is replacing.
  • Ford has invested over $300 million in the Lima plant for production of the engine.
  • The engine will be available starting in 2005 in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, potentially including the Five Hundred, Freestyle, Mercury Montego, and Lincoln Aviator.
"This new V-6 engine ensures we have a strong future here and a strong future for our workforce."

ADVANCED DIESELS IN TOLEDO

UAW Local 12 in Toledo is engaged in production of DaimlerChrysler's new Jeep Liberty Common Rail Diesel (CRD), the first diesel mid-sized SUV available in the U.S.

  • The Liberty CRD achieves an over 25% increase in fuel economy and a significant reduction in global warming gas emissions while maintaining the same performance and providing more torque than the gasoline V-6 Liberty.
  • DaimlerChrysler has incorporated a host of advanced technologies that make this vehicle much cleaner than previous generation diesel vehicles.
  • DaimlerChrysler is planning further improvements that will help this vehicle achieve even lower emissions in the future.
CONSUMER BENEFITS OF
JEEP LIBERTY CRD
  • Better gas mileage – over 25% better than gasoline version
  • Nearly 500 miles per tank of gas, compared with 375 for gasoline
  • Less frequent stops at the gas station
  • Over $4000 saved on fuel over the life of the vehicle
  • Lower green house gas emissions
  • Higher torque

ADVANCED DIESEL TECHNOLOGY USED
IN THE JEEP LIBERTY CRD:

  • An advanced common rail direct injection fuel system that helps the engine achieve finer atomization, leaner combustion, higher power, lower engine-out hydrocarbon exhaust emissions and lower NOx emission than previous generation diesel engines.
  • Improved injectors that burn fuel more thoroughly, producing fewer particulates and lowering emissions.
  • An electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger that improves control of boost pressure, reducing emission and improving full load engine power and torque.
