Technology: Hybrid Vehicle MPG (City/Hwy): 34/30 (2WD) Estimated Fuel Economy Improvement: Over 50% Ford has redesigned the Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid for the 2008 model year. The new versions hit dealerships in February, and are eligible for up to $3000 in federal tax credits. The newly designed SUVs continue to use a 2.3L Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine, mated to an electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). For the new models, Ford engineers revised software in the control system to improve the transition between gasoline and electric operation, making it even more seamless than in the previous versions. While the powertrain remains the same, the fuel economy estimate has been adjusted by the EPA, in order to more accurately account for real world driving conditions. The new estimates are 34 city, 30 highway (compared to 36 city, 31 highway in 2007). This is still a large improvement over the conventional versions of the Escape and Mariner, which achieve 18 city, 24 highway, with a V-6 and automatic transmission. To maximize efficiency, the new models also feature low rolling resistance tires and electric power steering. The interior of the Escape has been completely redesigned, and is the first U.S. automotive application of seating surfaces made from 100% post-industrial materials, supplied by InterfaceeFABRIC, Inc. The new polyester seating fabric will help conserve an estimated 600,000 gallons of water, an estimated 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents, and the equivalent of more than 7 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In addition, the material is completely recyclable, and can be re-used at the end of the vehicle's life. Ford was the first manufacturer to produce a full hybrid in the U.S. when it launched the Escape Hybrid in August 2004. It began production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid shortly thereafter.
