Hybrid Electric Buses

Technology: Hybrid-Electric Powertrain
MPG (City/Hwy): about 4mpg (city)
Estimated Fuel Economy Improvement: 50%

GM's Allison Transmission Plant 15 in Indianapolis started production of this low-emissions hybrid powertain in October of 2003 for use in hybrid transit buses capable of averaging 4 miles per gallon, a 50% improvement over conventional buses. The buses also achieve significant reductions in harmful emissions, including:

  • 50% of nitrous oxides
  • 90% of particulate matter
  • 90% of carbon monoxide
  • 90% of hydrocarbons
  • 50% of cardon dioxide

So far GM has delivered 588 buses to fleets in 46 U.S. cities and parks, as well as locations oversees.

Engineers and other workers at Allison have also helped to develop the two-mode hybrid electric system that GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW will use in upcoming SUVs.
